Scope and Limits of Domain Adaptation
Domain adaptation aims to make a model learned from a source distribution perform well on a different target distribution. It is applicable only when the shift satisfies assumptions that the adaptation method can exploit; without assumptions about how the source and target distributions relate, successful generalization cannot be guaranteed. Domain adaptation is therefore a specialized response to some distribution shifts, not a default remedy for every training–test mismatch.
