Metagenomics
Metagenomics is the study of genetic material recovered directly from environmental or clinical microbial communities, bypassing the need to isolate and culture individual species. This approach allows researchers to study the genetic material of all microbes within a community, including the estimated 99% of bacteria that cannot be cultured in a laboratory, and has enabled discoveries such as identifying 174 new bacterial species in a single study of the human gut microbiota.
