Modeling Opposite-Direction Motion in Logistics

A dispatch manager at a regional logistics hub is training a new coordinator. The manager asks the trainee to explain how to algebraically model the scenario of two field service vehicles that depart from the same hub at the exact same time and travel in opposite directions.

From the perspective of the trainee, write a brief explanation that addresses the following:

  1. State the standard formula relating distance (dd), rate (rr), and time (tt).
  2. Explain how the individual distances traveled by the two vehicles relate to the total separation distance between them.
  3. Write the general algebraic equation representing this relationship using the variables r1r_1 and r2r_2 for the individual speeds/rates, tt for the shared travel time, and DD for the total separation distance.
