An example of neutralism occurs in soil when conditions are unfavorable and *Bacillus anthracis* forms dormant, metabolically passive endospores. If the soil becomes warm and nutrient-rich, some endospores germinate into metabolically active (vegetating) bacteria, coexisting in symbiosis without affecting the remaining dormant endospores.
