Reading Direction and Visual Hierarchy

A user's familiar reading direction can influence how spatial position communicates visual hierarchy. In left-to-right contexts such as English, elements placed toward the left may be encountered or emphasized first; in right-to-left contexts such as Arabic, this pattern may be reversed. The attached image illustrates visual hierarchy for an English-speaking, left-to-right context.
