Why ACE2 Links SARS-CoV-2 Cell Entry to COVID-19 Treatment Strategies
ACE2 normally helps regulate blood pressure and inflammation by modulating angiotensin II. SARS-CoV-2 uses its spike protein to bind ACE2 on host cells during cell entry, and this binding can inhibit ACE2 activity, increasing angiotensin II-associated inflammation and tissue damage. These connected roles make blocking the spike–ACE2 interaction a proposed strategy for treating or preventing COVID-19.
