Bonding Properties of Biological Elements

The four most abundant elements in living matter—carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen—are light elements with low atomic numbers that form strong covalent bonds to produce molecules. Carbon forms four chemical bonds, nitrogen forms three, oxygen forms two, and hydrogen forms one. Within molecules, oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen often have one or more lone pairs of electrons that determine their physical and chemical properties.
