Chagas Disease

Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis) is caused by the flagellated protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi and is transmitted to humans by Triatoma spp. (commonly known as "kissing bugs"). The disease, which is most common in Latin America where it originated, affects heart tissue or tissues of the digestive system. Untreated infections can eventually lead to heart failure or serious neurological or digestive disorders.
