Challenges in Developing Antieukaryotic Medications

Developing antimicrobial drugs that target eukaryotic pathogens, such as fungi and protozoans, is highly difficult because their cells share key structural similarities with human cells, including ribosomes, cytoskeletons, and cell membranes. This similarity makes finding selective targets difficult, and consequently, these medications often produce toxic adverse effects in hosts.
