Cytopathic Effects

Cytopathic effects (CPEs) are distinct, observable structural and morphological abnormalities in host cells that result from viral infection. Examples of cytopathic effects include changes in cell shape (such as rounding), cell lysis, shrinkage of the nucleus, loss of adherence to container surfaces, cytoplasmic vacuolization, the formation of nuclear or cytoplasmic inclusion bodies, and cell fusion leading to multinucleated syncytia.
