Foundational Row Operations in Inventory Costing

You are a small business inventory manager organizing supply orders for your regional offices. To analyze the pricing of different order packages, you represent the system of purchases as an augmented matrix. Before simplifying the matrix to find individual unit costs, you want to train your assistant on the rules of matrix simplification so they do not alter the underlying system's solutions.

Write a short essay (2-3 paragraphs) in which you recall and describe the three foundational matrix row operations that are permitted. In your essay:

  1. State each of the three operations clearly.
  2. Briefly explain why these operations do not change the underlying mathematical relationships (solutions) of the system (i.e., how matrix rows relate back to the original linear equations of purchases).
  3. Provide a simple, conceptual example of how one might apply one of these operations to a row (for instance, if a row represents the purchase equation x+y=10x + y = 10, explain what multiplying that row by a non-zero number like 2{}2, resulting in the equation 2x+2y=20{}2x + 2y = 20, does to the equation).
