Helicobacter pylori

Helicobacter pylori is a helical, flagellated bacterium in the genus Helicobacter. While it is a beneficial member of the stomach microbiota, it is also the most common cause of chronic gastritis, stomach ulcers, and duodenal ulcers, and is linked to stomach cancer. It survives in the highly acidic environment of the stomach by producing urease and other enzymes that modify its environment to make it less acidic.
