Groups of Helminths

Although multicellular parasitic worms (helminths) are not technically microorganisms, they are studied in microbiology because their identification and diagnosis rely on observing microscopic eggs or adult worms. Furthermore, they are important parasites of both humans and domestic animals, even in developed countries.

Helminths in Microbiology

Dracunculus medinensis, commonly known as the guinea worm, is an example of a multicellular parasitic helminth. Infection usually occurs when an individual consumes drinking water that contains water fleas infected with guinea-worm larvae. As the adult worm gradually works its way out of the host's skin, it causes debilitating symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, and painful ulcers on the legs and feet. Thanks to coordinated global sanitation efforts to improve drinking water, cases of guinea-worm disease have plummeted from an estimated $${}3.5$$ million in the mid-$${}1980$$s to only $${}126$$ reported cases in $${}2014$$.

As multicellular animals, parasitic helminths possess organ systems. However, parasitic species often exhibit simplified or limited digestive tracts, nervous systems, and locomotor abilities compared to free-living forms.

Characteristics of Parasitic Helminths

Parasitic helminths frequently have complex reproductive cycles that involve multiple distinct developmental life stages and require more than one host species to complete.

Reproductive Cycles of Parasitic Helminths

An organism is monoecious when it possesses both male and female reproductive systems within a single individual, which is a characteristic of some parasitic helminth species.

Monoecious

An organism is dioecious when individual members have distinct male or female reproductive systems, meaning each individual has only one sex, which is a characteristic of some parasitic helminth species.

Dioecious

Helminth infections can lead to a range of clinical presentations, from subclinical cases where symptoms are so mild they are undetected, to severe, chronic conditions. Severe infections can result in serious complications such as fluid buildup and organ damage.
