Mycolic Acids

Mycolic acids are waxy lipid molecules that form an external layer in the cell walls of certain gram-positive bacteria, such as Mycobacterium. This waxy coat prevents the cells from drying out, blocks the penetration of Gram stain reagents (requiring a special acid-fast staining procedure for visualization), and protects the bacteria from some antibiotics.
