Oxidative deamination of glutamate by glutamate dehydrogenase

In liver mitochondria, glutamate dehydrogenase catalyzes the oxidative deamination of glutamate. Oxidation with NAD+ or NADP+ forms a Schiff-base intermediate, which is then hydrolyzed to yield α-ketoglutarate and ammonium: Glutamateα-ketoglutarate+NH4+\text{Glutamate} \rightarrow \text{α-ketoglutarate} + \text{NH}_4^+ The reaction is near equilibrium and is usually pulled toward products by removal of ammonium, which is toxic.
