Amino Acid Structure

An amino acid is an organic molecule containing a hydrogen atom, a carboxyl group (COOH-\text{COOH}), and an amino group (NH2-\text{NH}_2) bonded to a central carbon atom, called the α\alpha carbon. The fourth group attached to the α\alpha carbon is the variable side chain (R group) that defines the amino acid's identity.
