Pharmacologic Differences in Drug Enantiomers

Enantiomers of drug compounds can produce different pharmacological effects. For example, in the compound methorphan, the dextromethorphan enantiomer acts as a cough suppressant (antitussive), whereas the levomethorphan enantiomer acts as an analgesic similar in effect to codeine.
