Residential Home-Improvement Deposit Caps

Residential home-improvement deposit caps are jurisdiction-specific rules limiting what a contractor may collect before work begins. The governing rule may impose a fixed-dollar ceiling, a percentage of the contract price, or the lesser of the two. Supplied California guidance, for example, uses the lesser of $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, excluding finance charges. Before accepting a deposit, verify the rule where the work will occur and reflect that limit in the contract; commercial projects may be governed by different requirements.
