Silver stain microscopy

Silver stain microscopy is a technique used to visualize extremely thin spirochetes, such as Treponema pallidum, using a light microscope. Because these cells are difficult to observe with brightfield microscopy, they can be thickened with silver particles in tissue sections. While this fixation and staining process kills the cells, it effectively increases their visibility and serves as a diagnostic tool for syphilis.
