In the opening tale of the Masnavi, Rumi explicitly states that the story of the King, the Handmaiden, and the Goldsmith is not merely a historical or fictional narrative, but a direct representation of the inner state of the human soul:
'بشنوید ای دوستان این داستان / خود حقیقت نقد حال ماست آن' 'Hearken, O friends, to this story; in truth, it is the very state of our inner soul.'
