The Concept of Immediate Divine Chastisement (Goshmal) in the Masnavi
In the Masnavi, Jalaluddin Rumi employs the concept of 'goshmal-e haqq' (divine ear-pulling or immediate chastisement) to describe the instantaneous corrective feedback a seeker receives from the Divine upon breaking a solemn covenant or succumbing to spiritual negligence. Rather than being purely punitive, this immediate chastisement is an act of divine mercy and purification. It is designed to abruptly awaken the soul from spiritual slumber ('ghaflah') and bring the seeker back to a state of awareness and repentance. In the story of the mountain ascetic, his violation of his vow not to pluck pears is immediately answered by this 'goshmal', which manifests externally in the subsequent section when he is falsely accused and his hand is severed.
