The Paradox of Life in Death in Section 184 of the Masnavi
In Book Three, Section 184 of the Masnavi, Rumi explores the Sufi paradox that true spiritual life is achieved through physical or egoic death. The lover famously declares:
آزمودم مرگ من در زندگیست چون رهم زین زندگی پایندگیست
I have tested it: my death is in life; When I escape this life, there is eternity.
This verse embodies the core mystical concept of 'dying before you die' (fana). It illustrates that surrendering the ego and worldly existence is the necessary prerequisite for achieving eternal subsistence (baqa) in the Divine. The passage echoes the famous utterance of the mystic Mansur al-Hallaj ('Kill me, O my trusted friends, for in my being killed is my life'), which Rumi explicitly paraphrases in the subsequent lines.
