The Worldly Fear of Death and the Literal Interpretation of 'La Tulqu' in the Masnavi
In Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi (Book Three, Section 165), the crowd's objection to Hamza entering battle without armor illustrates the traditional, literalist perspective on mortality. Citing the Quranic injunction la tulqu bi-aydikum ila al-tahlukah ('do not cast yourselves with your own hands into ruin'), they argue that seeking physical danger violates divine law. This viewpoint treats physical death as ultimate destruction and loss. Understanding this literalist framework of self-preservation is a prerequisite for grasping the Sufi reconceptualization of death as spiritual liberation.
