The parasitic flatworms Schistosoma mansoni, S. haematobium, and S. japonicum are found in freshwater snails. The immature forms of these parasites infect humans by burrowing directly through the skin into the bloodstream, where they migrate to the lungs, liver, and subsequently other organs.
