متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation
| گفت او را ناصحی ای بی خبر | عاقبت اندیش اگر داری هنر |
| A counselor said to him: "O heedless one, Think of consequences, if you have any skill. | |
| درنگر پس را به عقل و پیش را | همچو پروانه مسوزان خویش را |
| Look back and ahead with reason — Do not burn yourself up like a moth. | |
| چون بخارا می روی دیوانه ای | لایق زنجیر و زندان خانه ای |
| Going to Bukhara? You are mad, Fit for chains and a prison-house. | |
| او ز تو آهن همی خاید ز خشم | او همی جوید ترا با بیست چشم |
| He gnaws iron with rage against you; He seeks you with twenty eyes. | |
| می کند او تیز از بهر تو کارد | او سگ قحطست و تو انبان آرد |
| He sharpens his knife for you — He is a famine-dog and you are a sack of flour. | |
| چون رهیدی و خدایت راه داد | سوی زندان می روی چونت فتاد |
| Since you escaped and God showed you the way, Why do you go toward the prison? What has come over you? | |
| بر تو گر ده گون موکل آمدی | عقل بایستی کز ایشان کم زدی |
| If ten kinds of wardens had set upon you, Reason would demand that you reduce their number. | |
| چون موکل نیست بر تو هیچ کس | از چه بسته گشت بر تو پیش و پس |
| Since no warden is set over you at all, Why is your way before and behind locked fast?" | |
| عشق پنهان کرده بود او را اسیر | آن موکل را نمی دید آن نذیر |
| Love had made him a prisoner in secret — That warner could not see this warden. | |
| هر موکل را موکل مختفیست | ورنه او در بند سگ طبعی ز چیست |
| Every warden has a hidden warden set over him; Otherwise, why is he himself in bondage to a dog-natured one? | |
| خشم شاه عشق بر جانش نشست | بر عوانی و سیه روییش بست |
| The wrath of the King of Love settled upon his soul, Binding him to villainy and dark-facedness. | |
| می زند او را که هین او رابزن | زان عوانان نهان افغان من |
| He strikes him, saying: "Hey! Strike him!" — My lamentation is hidden from those bailiffs. | |
| هرکه بینی در زیانی می رود | گرچه تنها ، با عوانی می رود |
| Whoever you see walking into loss, Though he walks alone, he walks with a bailiff. | |
| گر ازو واقف بدی افغان زدی | پیش آن سلطان سلطانان شدی |
| Had you been aware of him, you would have cried out And gone before the Sultan of Sultans. | |
| ریختی بر سر به پیش شاه خاک | تا امان دیدی ز دیو سهمناک |
| You would have poured dust upon your head before the King, To find refuge from the terrible demon. | |
| میر دیدی خویش را ای کم ز مور | زان ندیدی آن موکل را تو کور |
| You saw yourself as a prince, O lesser-than-an-ant — And so you did not see that warden, O blind one. | |
| غره گشتی زین دروغین پر و بال | پر و بالی کو کشد سوی وبال |
| You were deceived by these false wings — Wings that drag one toward ruin. | |
| پر سبک دارد ره بالا کند | چون گل آلو شد گرانیها کند |
| A light feather finds the path upward; When it becomes mud-caked, it makes itself heavy. | |
