مر مرا در سر مزن در رو ممال
از من آن آمد که بودم ناسزا 
ناسزایم را تو ده حسن الجزا
گفت تیری جست از شست ای پسر 
نیست سنت کآید آن واپس به سر
لیک در خواهم ز نیکوداوری 
تا که ایمان آن زمان با خود بری
چونک ایمان برده باشی زنده ای 
چونک با ایمان روی پاینده ای
هم در آن دم حال بر خواجه بگشت

When he heard these things, he ran swiftly and urgently,\nHe went to the door of Moses, Kalīm Allāh.\nHe was rubbing his face in the dust out of fear,\nCrying: "Rescue me from this, O Kalīm!"\nHe said: "Go, sell yourself and flee,\nSince you have become a master, leap out of the pit.\nCast harm upon the Muslims,\nDouble up the purses and the saddlebags.\nI saw this fate within the brick,\nThat which became manifest to you in the mirror.\nThe wise man sees the end first with his heart,\nThe one of scant wisdom sees only at the end."\nAgain he lamented: "O you of noble character,\nDo not strike me down, do not rub my face in the dirt.\nFrom me came what marked me as unworthy,\nGive my unworthiness a beautiful recompense."\nHe said: "An arrow has sprung from the thumb-ring, O son,\nIt is not the custom to turn that arrow back.\nBut I will ask, in righteous judgment,\nThat you may carry your faith with you at that moment.\nSince if you carry faith, you are alive,\nSince if you go with faith, you are everlasting."\nAt that very moment, the state turned for the Khawja,\nHis heart became turbulent, and they brought a basin.\nThis turbulence is of death, not cholera from food,\nWhat good does vomiting do you, O wretched, raw one!\nFour people carried him toward the chamber,\nHe was rubbing his shin against the back of his shin.\nYou did not heed Moses' counsel, you acted insolently,\nYou hurled yourself against a blade of steel.\nThe blade feels no shame before your life —\nThis is yours, O brother, that is yours.

که خدا بدهد عوض زینت دگر
اسپ این خواجه سقط خواهد شدن 
روز فردا سیر خور کم کن حزن
مر سگان را عید باشد مرگ اسپ 
روزی وافر بود بی جهد و کسپ
اسپ را بفروخت چون بشنید مرد 
پیش سگ شد آن خروسش روی زرد
روز دیگر همچنان نان را ربود 
آن خروس و سگ برو لب بر گشود
کای خروس عشوه ده چند این دروغ 
ظالمی و کاذبی و بی فروغ
اسپ کش گفتی سقط گردد کجاست 
کور اخترگوی و محرومی ز راست
گفت او را آن خروس با خبر 
که سقط شد اسپ او جای دگر
اسپ را بفروخت و جست او از زیان 
آن زیان انداخت او بر دیگران
لیک فردا استرش گردد سقط 
مر سگان را باشد آن نعمت فقط
زود استر را فروشید آن حریص 
یافت از غم وز زیان آن دم محیص
روز ثالث گفت سگ با آن خروس 
ای امیر کاذبان با طبل و کوس
گفت او بفروخت استر را شتاب 
گفت فردایش غلام آید مصاب
چون غلام او بمیرد نانها 
بر سگ و خواهنده ریزند اقربا
این شنید و آن غلامش را فروخت 
رست از خسران و رخ را بر فروخت
شکرها می کرد و شادیها که من 
رستم از سه واقعه اندر زمن
تا زبان مرغ و سگ آموختم 
دیدهٔ سوء القضا را دوختم
روز دیگر آن سگ محروم گفت 
کای خروس ژاژخا کو طاق و جفت

Then the rooster said: "Be still, do not grieve,
For God will give another grace in recompense.
This master's horse will perish—
Eat your fill tomorrow, lessen your sorrow.
The death of the horse will be a feast for dogs,
Abundant sustenance without toil or trade."

The man sold the horse when he heard this—
The rooster came before the dog, pale-faced.
The next day the rooster snatched the bread just as before,
And the dog opened his lips against him:

"O deceiving rooster, how long these lies?
You are unjust, a liar, and without light.
The horse you said would perish—where is it?
Blind astrologer, you are deprived of truth!"

The knowing rooster said to him:
"His horse did perish, but in another place.
He sold the horse and escaped the loss;
He cast that loss upon others.
But tomorrow his mule will perish—
That bounty will belong to the dogs alone."

That greedy one quickly sold the mule,
And in that moment found escape from grief and loss.
On the third day the dog said to the rooster:
"O chief of liars, with drum and trumpet!"

He said: "He sold the mule in haste."
He said: "Tomorrow his slave will meet with calamity.
When his slave dies, the relatives
Will scatter bread upon the dog and the beggar."

He heard this and sold that slave of his;
He was saved from loss, and his face shone bright.
He gave thanks and rejoiced: "I
Have escaped three calamities in this age!
Since I have learned the language of bird and dog,
I have stitched shut the eye of ill-fate."

The next day that deprived dog said:
"O babbling rooster, where is odd and even?"

گفت باری نطق سگ کو بر درست	نطق مرغ خانگی کاهل پرست
He said: "At least, where is the speech of the dog, truly? The speech of the domestic fowl, the worshipper of sloth?"
گفت موسی هین تو دانی رو رسید	نطق این هر دو شود بر تو پدید
Moses said: "Heed! Go — you know — the time has come; The speech of these two shall become manifest to you."
بامدادان از برای امتحان	ایستاد او منتظر بر آستان
At dawn, for the sake of trial, He stood waiting at the threshold.
خادمه سفره بیفشاند و فتاد	پاره ای نان بیات آثار زاد
The handmaid shook out the tablecloth and there fell A piece of stale bread, remnants of provisions.
در ربود آن را خروسی چون گرو	گفت سگ کردی تو بر ما ظلم رو
A rooster snatched it up like a pledge; The dog said: "You have done us wrong — go!
دانهٔ گندم توانی خورد و من	عاجزم در دانه خوردن در وطن
You are able to eat wheat grain, but I Am helpless to eat grain in this homeland.
گندم و جو را و باقی حبوب	می توانی خورد و من نه ای طروب
Wheat and barley, and the rest of the grains, You can eat, but I cannot, O joyful one.
این لب نانی که قسم ماست نان	می ربایی این قدر را از سگان
This crust of bread that is our portion of bread, You are snatching even this much from the dogs."
