Book Three - Section 190 - The Arrival of a Guest at That Mosque

Text and Translation

Until a guest arrived at nighttime,
who had heard that wondrous fame—
He came to put it to the test,
for he was truly manly and soul-surfeited.
He said: "I count a head and a belly as little;
consider gone from the soul's treasury one small grain.
Let the body's form go—who am I?
The image does not diminish, since I remain.
Since I was a breath blown from God's grace,
I am the breath of the Real, separate from the body's reed.
So that the clamor of His breath falls not on this side,
so that that jewel may be freed from the tight shell.
Since He said, 'Wish for death, O you truthful ones'—
I am truthful; I will scatter my soul upon this."
