Text and Translation

Hear one tale, O you of auspicious step —
There was a mosque on the outskirts of the city of Ray.
No one would sleep therein at night out of fear
Without his child becoming an orphan that very night.
So many a naked stranger entered it
That at dawn, like stars, he went into the grave.
Make yourself well aware of this;
Morning has come — cut short your sleep.
Everyone said: fierce fairies dwell therein,
Guest-slayers within, armed with blunt swords.
Another said: it is sorcery and talisman,
That this watch-post is the enemy and foe of the soul.
Another said: set a clear inscription
On its door: "O traveler, do not lodge here.
Do not sleep here at night if your life is dear to you;
Otherwise death here will spring its ambush upon you."
And yet another said: "At night put a lock on it;
If a heedless one comes, turn him away."
