متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation

چون بلال از ضعف شد همچون هلالرنگ مرگ افتاد بر روی بلال
When Bilāl from weakness became like the crescent moon,
The color of death fell upon Bilāl's face.
جفت او دیدش بگفتا وا حربپس بلالش گفت نه نه وا طرب
His spouse saw him and said, "Wā ḥarb — oh, what grief!"
Then Bilāl said to her, "No, no — wā ṭarab — oh, what joy!"
تا کنون اندر حرب بودم ز زیستتو چه دانی مرگ چون عیشست و چیست
"Until now I was in torment from living;
What do you know of what death is and how it is like bliss?"
این همی گفت و رخش در عین گفتنرگس و گلبرگ و لاله می شکفت
He was saying this, and in the very act of speaking his face
Bloomed with narcissus and rose-petal and tulip.
تاب رو و چشم پر انوار اومی گواهی داد بر گفتار او
The radiance of his face and his eyes full of lights
Were bearing witness to his words.
هر سیه دل می سیه دیدی ورامردم دیده سیاه آمد چرا
Every dark-hearted one would see him as dark —
Why has the pupil of the eye come to be black?
مردم نادیده باشد رو سیاهمردم دیده بود مرآت ماه
The unseen pupil is dark-faced,
The seen pupil is the mirror of the moon.
خود که بیند مردم دیدهٔ ترادر جهان جز مردم دیده فزا
Who in the world can see the pupil of your eye
Except a pupil-illuminating one?
چون به غیر مردم دیده ش ندیدپس به غیر او که در رنگش رسید
Since none other than the pupil saw him,
Who other than it reached his true color?
پس جز او جمله مقلد آمدنددر صفات مردم دیده بلند
So all others were mere imitators
In the qualities of the lofty, discerning one.
گفت جفتش الفراق ای خوش خصالگفت نه نه الوصالست الوصال
His spouse said, "Al-firāq — parting, O fair-natured one!"
He said, "No, no — al-wiṣāl — it is union, union!"
گفت جفت امشب غریبی می رویاز تبار و خویش غایب می شوی
His spouse said, "Tonight you go as a stranger,
Departing absent from kin and family."
گفت نه نه بلک امشب جان منمی رسد خود از غریبی در وطن
He said, "No, no — rather tonight my soul
Itself arrives from exile into the homeland."
گفت رویت را کجا بینیم ماگفت اندر حلقهٔ خاص خدا
She said, "Where shall we see your face?"
He said, "In the intimate circle (ḥalqa) of God."
حلقهٔ خاصش به تو پیوسته استگر نظر بالا کنی نه سوی پست
His intimate circle is joined to you,
If you look upward and not toward the low.
اندر آن حلقه ز رب العالمیننور می تابد چو در حلقه نگین
In that circle, from the Lord of the Worlds (Rabb al-ʿĀlamīn),
Light shines like a gem set in a ring.
گفت ویران گشت این خانه دریغگفت اندر مه نگر منگر به میغ
She said, "Alas, this house has been ruined!"
He said, "Look at the moon, do not look at the cloud."
کرد ویران تا کند معمورترقومم انبه بود و خانه مختصر
He ruined it to make it more flourishing —
My people were many and the house was small.
