متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation

این بدان ماند که خرگوشی بگفتمن رسول ماهم و با ماه جفت
This resembles how a hare once said:
"I am the moon's messenger, companion to the moon.
کز رمهٔ پیلان بر آن چشمهٔ زلالجمله نخجیران بدند اندر وبال
For from the elephants' herd by that limpid spring,
all the wild creatures were suffering affliction —
جمله محروم و ز خوف از چشمه دورحیله ای کردند چون کم بود زور
All deprived, and from fear kept far from the spring;
they devised a ruse, since their strength was weak.
از سر که بانگ زد خرگوش زالسوی پیلان در شب غرهٔ هلال
From a hilltop the old hare called out
toward the elephants on the night of the new crescent,
که بیا رابع عشر ای شاه پیلتا درون چشمه یابی این دلیل
Saying: 'Come on the fourteenth, O elephant-king,
so that within the spring you shall find this proof.
شاه پیلا من رسولم پیش بیستبر رسولان بند و زجر و خشم نیست
O elephant-king, I am a messenger — step forward;
upon messengers there is no binding, rebuke, or wrath.
ماه می گوید که ای پیلان رویدچشمه آن ماست زین یکسو شوید
The moon says: O elephants, go away;
that spring is ours — stand aside from it.
ورنه منتان کور گردانم ستمگفتم از گردن برون انداختم
Otherwise I shall blind you all outright —
I have spoken; I have cast the burden from my neck.
ترک این چشمه بگویید و رویدتا ز زخم تیغ مه ایمن شوید
Renounce this spring and go,
so that you may be safe from the wound of the moon's blade.
نک نشان آنست کاندر چشمه ماهمضطرب گردد ز پیل آب خواه
Look — the sign is this: within the spring the moon
becomes troubled by the thirsty, water-seeking elephant.
آن فلان شب حاضر آ ای شاه پیلتا درون چشمه یابی زین دلیل
Come on such-and-such a night, O elephant-king,
so that within the spring you may find this proof.'
چونک هفت و هشت از مه بگذریدشاه پیل آمد ز چشمه می چرید
When seven and eight days of the month had passed,
the elephant-king came and grazed near the spring.
چونک زد خرطوم پیل آن شب درآبمضطرب شد آب ومه کرد اضطراب
When the elephant's trunk struck the water that night,
the water became agitated and the moon was set trembling.
پیل باور کرد از وی آن خطابچون درون چشمه مه کرد اضطراب
The elephant believed those words from him,
since within the spring the moon was trembling.
مانه زان پیلان گولیم ای گروهکه اضطراب ماه آردمان شکوه
We are not such foolish elephants, O company,
that the agitation of the moon should fill us with dread.
انبیا گفتند آوه پند جانسخت تر کرد ای سفیهان بندتان
The prophets cried: 'Alas! Soul-nourishing counsel!' —
O fools, it has drawn your chains yet tighter."
