متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation

جهد فرعونی چو بی توفیق بودهرچه او می دوخت آن تفتیق بود
As Pharaoh's striving was without tawfīq,
Whatever he stitched, that was its unraveling.
از منجم بود در حکمش هزاروز معبر نیز و ساحر بی شمار
There were a thousand astrologers in his command,
And dream-interpreters as well, and sorcerers without number.
مقدم موسی نمودندش بخوابکه کند فرعون و ملکش را خراب
The coming of Moses was shown to him in a dream —
That he would lay Pharaoh and his kingdom to ruin.
با معبر گفت و با اهل نجومچون بود دفع خیال و خواب شوم
He spoke with the dream-interpreter and with the people of the stars:
"How can this vision and ominous dream be averted?"
جمله گفتندش که تدبیری کنیمراه زادن را چو ره زن می زنیم
They all told him: "We will devise a stratagem;
We will waylay the path of birth like a highwayman."
تا رسید آن شب که مولد بود آنرای این دیدند آن فرعونیان
Until that night arrived when that birth was to be —
Those Pharaonians devised this counsel:
که برون آرند آن روز از پگاهسوی میدان بزم و تخت پادشاه
That they would bring them out that day at dawn
Toward the festival field and the king's throne.
الصلا ای جمله اسرائیلیانشاه می خواند شما را زان مکان
"Ho! All you Children of Israel —
The king summons you from that place,
تا شما را رو نماید بی نقاببر شما احسان کند بهر ثواب
That he may show you his face unveiled
And bestow kindness upon you for the sake of merit" —
کان اسیران را به جز دوری نبوددیدن فرعون دستوری نبود
For those captives there was nothing but distance;
To see Pharaoh was not permitted.
گر فتادندی به ره در پیش اوبهر آن یاسه بخفتندی برو
If they happened to fall in his path before him,
For the sake of that yāsa they would prostrate themselves face-down.
یاسه این بد که نبیند هیچ اسیردر گه و بیگه لقای آن امیر
The yāsa was this: that no captive should see —
At any hour, timely or untimely — the face of that commander.
بانگ چاووشان چو در ره بشنودتا نبیند رو به دیواری کند
When he heard the cry of the chāwūshān upon the road,
So as not to see, he would turn his face to a wall.
ور ببیند روی او مجرم بودآنچ بتر بر سر او آن رود
And if he saw his face, he was guilty —
Whatever was worse would befall him.
بودشان حرص لقای ممتنعچون حریصست آدمی فیما منع
They had craving for the forbidden encounter,
For a human being is greedy for what is withheld (fīmā muni'a).
