متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation
| آن یکی مرد دومو آمد شتاب | پیش یک آیینه دار مستطاب |
| A certain man with two-colored hair came hastily before an esteemed mirror-holder/barber. | |
| گفت از ریشم سپیدی کن جدا | که عروس نو گزیدم ای فتی |
| He said, “Separate the white from my beard, for I have chosen a new bride, O young man.” | |
| ریش او ببرید و کل پیشش نهاد | گفت تو بگزین مرا کاری فتاد |
| He cut off his beard and placed the whole of it before him, saying, “You choose; some business has come up for me.” | |
| این سؤال و آن جوابست آن گزین | که سر اینها ندارد درد دین |
| This is the question and that is the answer; choose that, for one who has religious pain has no head for these things. | |
| آن یکی زد سیلیی مر زید را | حمله کرد او هم برای کید را |
| Someone slapped Zayd; he too attacked in order to strike back. | |
| گفت سیلی زن سؤالت می کنم | پس جوابم گوی وانگه می زنم |
| The slapper said, “I am asking you a question; answer me, and then I will strike. | |
| بر قفای تو زدم آمد طراق | یک سؤالی دارم اینجا در وفاق |
| I struck the nape of your neck and a crack sounded. | |
| این طراق از دست من بودست یا | از قفاگاه تو ای فخر کیا |
| I have a question here, by agreement: was this crack from my hand, or from the place of your nape, O pride of nobles?” | |
| گفت از درد این فراغت نیستم | که درین فکر و تفکر بیستم |
| He said, “Because of this pain I have no leisure to stand in this thought and reflection. | |
| تو که بی دردی همی اندیش این | نیست صاحب درد را این فکر هین |
| You, who are without pain, go on thinking about this; the one who has pain has no such thought, beware.” | |
