Closing Physical Senses to Awaken Spiritual Perception in the Masnavi
In Book 1, Section 26 of the Masnavi, Rumi emphasizes the necessity of transcending the physical senses to awaken spiritual perception. Speaking through the character of the vizier, Rumi advises seekers to put cotton in the ears of their worldly senses in order to hear the divine call of 'Irji'i' (Return to your Lord). He contrasts the outward, physical journey, which is limited to the material world ('dry land'), with the inward, spiritual journey that steps into the divine 'sea'. This illustrates the core Sufi principle that the silencing of outward faculties and worldly chatter is a necessary prerequisite for experiencing inner spiritual realities.
