The Metaphor of Joseph's Scent and Spiritual Perception in the Masnavi

In the Masnavi, Jalaluddin Rumi utilizes the 'scent of Joseph' as a metaphor for the 'Scent of the Real' (HaqqHaqq) to illustrate the nature of spiritual perception (basirahbasirah). Rumi contrasts the physical proximity of Joseph's brothers—who remained blind to his spiritual reality—with the physical distance of Jacob, whose love allowed him to detect the divine fragrance from a hundred leagues away. This metaphor emphasizes that spiritual truth is experienced not through external senses or formal knowledge (ilmilm), but through the heart's receptivity and love (ishqishq). One who lacks this inner sense is likened to the bearer of Joseph's shirt who, despite holding the garment, remains oblivious to the spiritual fragrance that revived Jacob's sight.
