Clostridium botulinum

The bacterium Clostridium botulinum produces botulinum neurotoxin, the most lethal biological toxin known, which blocks acetylcholine release in neuromuscular junctions to cause flaccid paralysis. While responsible for rare, often fatal cases of botulism, this toxin is also used in minute doses to treat human muscle pathologies and cosmetically to reduce wrinkles.
