Divine Revelation and Trust: Casting Moses into the Nile in the Masnavi
In Book 3 of Rumi's Masnavi, Moses's mother receives a divine revelation instructing her to cast her infant into the Nile to protect him from Pharaoh's infanticidal campaign. Rumi uses this narrative to emphasize the spiritual principle of absolute reliance (Tawakkul) on God. Despite Pharaoh's exhaustive and deadly machinations to eliminate the prophesied child—compared here to a dragon of deception—divine providence intervenes. God assures Moses's mother that placing trust in Him will ensure the child's safety and ultimately triumph over Pharaoh's stratagems, illustrating that divine will effortlessly overrides even the most elaborate and tyrannical worldly plotting.
