Book Three - Section 36 - Revelation Coming to the Mother of Moses to Cast Moses into the Water

Original content

English translation

Again revelation came: “Cast him into the water; keep your face toward hope, and do not tear out your hair. Cast him into the Nile and trust: I will reunite you with him, bright-faced.” This discourse has no end; his stratagems all kept twisting around his own shank and foot. He was killing hundreds of thousands of children outside, while Moses was inside, in the place of honor in the house. In madness he killed wherever there was a fetus, by the devices of that blind-eyed far-seer. Pharaoh the obstinate's stratagem was a dragon; it had devoured the stratagems of the kings of the world. But one more Pharaoh-like than he appeared and drew in both him and his stratagem. The stratagem was a dragon, and the staff became a dragon; this one devoured that one by God's enabling grace. Hand was above hand: how far does this go? To God, for unto Him is the end. For that One is a sea without bottom or shore; all seas are like a torrent before it. If ruses and remedies are dragons, before “except God” they are all “no.” When my exposition reached this point, it laid down its head, was effaced; and God knows best the right guidance. What was in Pharaoh is in you, but your dragon is imprisoned in the pit. Alas, all these states are yours, yet you will fasten them onto Pharaoh. If they say it of you, horror rises in you; if of another, it seems to you a tale. How the accursed nafs ruins you; this close companion casts you far away indeed. Your fire lacks Pharaoh's firewood; otherwise it would flame up like Pharaoh's.
