Poem

Book Three - Section 209 - The Rest of the Account of That Guest in the Guest-Killing Mosque

Original content

English translation

Tell again: what was that pure-hearted lion-man shown, And what did he do in that mosque?

He lay down in the mosque — but where was sleep for him? How does a drowning man sleep in a stream?

Sleep belongs to birds and fish; Lovers lie beneath the floodwaters of grief.

At midnight a terrifying voice arrived, Saying: "I am coming, I am coming upon you, O seeker of benefit!"

Five times this harsh voice kept arriving, And the heart was being torn to shreds.
