| قوم گفتند ای گروه این رنج ما | نیست زان رنجی که بپذیرد دوا |
| The people said: O company, this affliction of ours Is not the kind of affliction that accepts a remedy. | |
| سالها گفتید زین افسون و پند | سخت تر می گشت زان هر لحظه بند |
| For years you spoke these spells and admonitions, Yet the chain grew harder from them every moment. | |
| گر دوا را این مرض قابل بدی | آخر از وی ذره ای زایل شدی |
| If this disease were receptive to a remedy, At least a particle of it would have vanished by now. | |
| سده چون شد آب ناید در جگر | گر خورد دریا رود جایی دگر |
| When the liver is obstructed, water cannot enter it; Even if one drinks an ocean, it goes elsewhere. | |
| لاجرم آماس گیرد دست و پا | تشنگی را نشکند آن استقا |
| Inevitably hands and feet swell, And that drinking of water does not quench the thirst. | |
