Text and Translation

O slave, now look — your waterskin is full,
So you may speak no complaint of good or ill.
That black one stood bewildered by his proof;
His faith breathed forth from lā-makān, the Placeless.
He saw a spring pouring down from the air,
His waterskin become a veil over that grace.
From that gaze the veils were also torn apart,
Until he saw clearly the spring of the Unseen.
The slave filled his eyes with tears in that moment;
He forgot the master and forgot his station.
His hands and feet halted from traveling the road;
God cast an earthquake into his soul.
Again, for expediency, He drew him back:
"Come back to yourself, return, O beneficiary."
"This is not the time of bewilderment — bewilderment lies ahead;
This moment, enter the path, nimble and swift."
He set the hands of Muṣṭafā upon his face
And gave him many loving kisses.
Muṣṭafā rubbed his blessed hand upon his cheek
And at that moment made him blessed and radiant.
That Zanjī, son of Ḥabash, turned white;
His night became like the full moon, bright as day.
He became a Yūsuf in beauty and in grace;
He said to him: "Now go, present yourself, and tell what passed."
He kept walking, drunk, without head or foot;
In going he could not tell his foot from his hand.
Then he came with two waterskins flowing full
Toward the master from the outskirts of the caravan.
