The Annulment of Human Intentions as Spiritual Awakening in the Masnavi

In Book 3 of Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, the poet explores the profound theological concept of the annulment of human intentions as a mechanism for spiritual awakening. Rumi argues that the frequent frustration of human desires and the breaking of resolves are not mere misfortunes, but deliberate divine acts designed to demonstrate God's absolute mastery and overwhelming power. By experiencing the continuous thwarting of their plans, individuals are made acutely aware of their own limitations and the presence of a Supreme Overpowerer. Furthermore, Rumi draws a critical distinction in how different spiritual seekers respond to this realization: while the 'wise' (those guided by mere intellect) are broken by divine will out of compulsion and restriction, spiritual 'lovers' embrace the breaking of their intentions willingly, finding in their unfulfilled worldly desires a direct guide to Paradise.
