دفتر سوم - بخش ۲۱۹ - تفسیر این خبر کی مصطفی علیه السلام فرمود لا تفضلونی علی یونس بن متی / Book Three – Section 219 – Commentary on the Words of Mustafa, Peace Be Upon Him: 'Do Not Prefer Me Over Yunus Son of Matta'

Text and Translation

The Prophet said: "My mi'raj
Has no preference over the mi'raj of Yunus.
Mine was upward to the heavens, his was downward—
For nearness to God is beyond all reckoning.
Nearness is not going high or going low;
Nearness to God is being freed from the prison of existence.
For Nothingness, what place is there for up or down?
For Nothingness, there is no near or far, no soon or late.
The workshop and treasure of God are in Nothingness;
O you deceived by existence, what do you know of what Nothingness is?
The sum of their defeat, O master,
Bears no resemblance whatsoever to our defeat.
They are as joyful in humiliation and ruin
As we are in times of fortune and honor.
The provision of provisionlessness is all his fief;
His poverty and abasement are his pride and exaltation.
One of them said: "If he is such, why did he not see?
Why did he laugh when he saw us in chains?
Since he has been transformed, his joy
Is not from this prison or from this freedom.
Then why did his soul rejoice at the defeat of enemies?
Why was he so puffed up with this victory and triumph?
His soul rejoiced because against the male lions
He easily gained victory and power and triumph.
So we knew that he is not free—
He is content and glad only in this world.
For otherwise, how would he laugh? For the people of that other world
Are compassionate and kind toward both good and bad."
The prisoners murmured this under their tongues,
Discussing it among themselves—
So that the guardian would not hear and strive against them;
But the speech itself carried to the ear of that Sultan.
