Text and Translation

A message came to him from Divine Fortune: "Go on,
Do not grieve over being barred from this victory.
For in this humiliation there are immediate conquests for you —
Behold, such-and-such fortress, such-and-such place is yours.
Look, in the end, when he turned back swiftly,
What came from him upon Qurayẓa and Naḍīr?
The fortresses around both those places as well
Were surrendered, and from the spoils came benefits.
And if that is not for you, look at this company:
Full of grief and pain, they are enraptured and in love.
They eat the poison of abasement as if it were sugar,
They graze upon the thorns of sorrows like camels.
For the very essence of grief — not for relief —
This descent before them is like a treasure coffer.
So joyful are they in the depths of the pit
That they fear the throne and the crown.
Wherever the Beloved is, there is one's companion —
Above the celestial sphere, not beneath the earth."
