Book Three - Section 61 - Pharaoh's Falling Ill from Illusion, Due to the Veneration of the People

Original content

English translation

The prostration of the people--women, children, and men-- Struck the heart of Pharaoh and made it sick.

Each one calling him "Lord" and "King" So utterly ruined him through illusion

That he grew bold in claiming divinity; He became a dragon, never sated.

The bane of the partial intellect is illusion and conjecture, For in darkness it has made its dwelling.

On the ground, if the path be but half a gaz, A person walks it safely, without illusion.

But if you walk atop a high wall, Though its width be two gaz, you walk crookedly--

Nay, you fall from the heart's trembling through illusion; Contemplate well the fear born of illusion, and understand.
