Incremental Reinforcement of Delusion by Collective Suggestion in the Masnavi
In Jalaluddin Rumi's 'Masnavi' (Book 3, Section 60), the psychological mechanism of collective suggestion is shown to operate through incremental reinforcement. When the first schoolboy falsely tells the master that his face looks pale, the master initially rejects the claim but a 'dust of delusion' is planted in his mind. As subsequent students enter one by one and repeat the same observation, this seed of doubt is incrementally fed and reinforced. Rumi illustrates how individual intellect can be overwhelmed by the cumulative weight of repeated external testimonies, demonstrating that belief in falsehoods is often a gradual process of social conformity and psychological erosion rather than a sudden shift.
