Neisseria

The genus Neisseria is a group of fastidious, microaerophilic cocci that colonize mucosal surfaces of the human body. They require high levels of moisture, nutrient supplements, carbon dioxide, and low oxygen concentrations for growth. In culture, they exhibit a diplococcal growth pattern, appearing as pairs of cells resembling coffee beans, and are grown on chocolate agar for optimal growth and identification.
