Rumi's Allegory of the Demon's Internal Threats

In Book Three of the Masnavi, Rumi provides a psychological commentary on the Quranic verse 'And rally against them with your cavalry and your infantry' (17:64). He portrays the 'demon' (representing the carnal soul or Satan) as an internal voice that assaults the spiritual seeker with fears of poverty, misery, and isolation. Rumi uses this allegory to illustrate how the ego wages psychological warfare to deter individuals from earnestly committing to the path of faith, testing their spiritual resolve and courage before they can achieve true awakening.
