Text and Translation

When you resolve on religion with earnest endeavor, the devil raises a cry within your inner nature,
Saying, 'Do not go in that direction, reflect, O misguided one, for you will become a captive of pain and poverty;
You will become destitute, cut off from friends, you will become humiliated and eat the bread of regret.'
Out of fear of the cry of that accursed devil, you flee back into error away from certainty,
Saying, 'Behold, tomorrow and the day after are mine; I will tread the path of religion, for respite lies ahead of us.'
Then again you see Death, how from left and right he drags away the neighbor as soon as the cry arises.
Once more, out of fear for your life, you resolve on religion; you make yourself a man for a moment.
Then you gird on armor of knowledge and wisdom, saying, 'I will not retreat out of any fear.'
Again, he raises a cry against you out of deceit, saying, 'Be afraid, and turn back from the sword of poverty!'
Once more you flee from the path of light, and cast away that weapon of knowledge and skill.
For years you have been a slave to him through a single cry, and in such darkness you have spread your felt-rug.
The awe of the demons' cry has bound humankind and seized their throats,
So that their souls have become as hopeless of the light as the souls of the unbelievers of the people of the graves.
Since such is the majesty of the cry of that accursed one, what must the majesty of the Divine cry be?
The awe of the falcon is upon the noble partridge; the fly has no share of that awe,
Because the falcon is not a hunter of flies; spiders alone catch flies, and that is all.
The spider of the devil has pomp and power over a fly like you, not over the partridge and the eagle.
The cry of the devils is the herdsman of the wicked; the cry of the King is the guardian of the saints.
So that, through these two far-sounding cries, not a single drop of the sweet sea may mix with the bitter sea.
