Staphylococcus aureus is a medically important species of spherical, gram-positive bacteria that form grape-like clusters. It is a common cause of wound infections. Because some strains of S. aureus are resistant to many antibiotics, these skin infections can spread to other areas of the body and become serious, sometimes resulting in amputations or death if not treated with effective medications.
