The Allegory of Checkmating the King under the Blanket in the Masnavi

This concept explains the allegorical significance of the story of the Jester checkmating the Sayyid (King of Tirmidh) in Rumi's Masnavi. In this tale, the jester hides under six felt blankets to declare his victory, demonstrating that speaking the truth (checkmating the king) to an egotistical, wrathful ruler can only be done safely from behind a protective veil. Rumi uses this as a metaphor for spiritual guides or wise counselors who must employ tact, humor, or indirect methods to correct and guide prideful individuals without triggering their destructive anger.
